Survival vs. Survivalism

Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010

It is disconcerting - but not surprising - that a number of people including some who are very active in certain political circles - are concerned about how to make preparations, including the ability to keep at home during a public health crisis, avoiding the runs to the store, the usual mixing in high-crowd locations, but they are also caught up with the “survivalist” mentality of “Annie get your gun” (or rather, your several guns and a big stockpile of ammo).

This is an unfortunate turn of thinking. It is dangerous because it is the kind of thinking that feeds into fear, paranoia, and violent mistakes.

I would like to do a seminar, or workshop, or class, on this whole topic, social and local-neighborhood sustainability, resilience, continuity, and to address the Rationale approaches that can work, and the things to avoid, like stockpiling of firearms by inexperienced and potentially trigger-prone citizens in their homes and apartments.

More on this later

Instead of giving money to scientists, docs, and CRAIDO/CUBIT, look how the “stimulus money”

Tuesday, January 26th, 2010

http://edition.cnn.com/2010/US/01/25/kaye.signs/index.html

This is unbelievable WASTE and STUPIDITY. That $1M could = 10 CRAIDO mobile labstations around the country.

See more surprising ways your tax-dollars are being spent on the week-long series “The Stimulus Project” on AC360, 10 p.m. ET

A state senator from Ohio says his state is spending $1 million on road signs to advertise the use of stimulus money for road projects. In other words, the state is using your money to tell you it’s spending your money.

State Sen. Tim Grendell, R-Ohio, calls it a waste of taxpayer dollars. The road signs he’s concerned about display words such as “Project Funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act” Some road projects have two signs, and some don’t have any at all, but the signs aren’t cheap.

The bigger signs can cost as much as $3,000 each, according to Grendell, who says this is just a big “thank you” to the Obama Administration.

He told CNN, “Send a fruit basket if you want to say ‘thank you.’ Don’t waste a million dollars saying ‘thank’ you to Washington for giving us back our tax money.”

Grendell says the message here is that stimulus dollars are “being spent stupidly.”

Ohio’s Department of Transportation says that criticism misses the point — that this is all about transparency.

Scott Varner, a spokesperson for the department said, “the president made a commitment to have these symbols of stimulus projects; we think it’s important. What better way to let the taxpayer know where stimulus money is being spent?”

While Varner says the $1 million price tag on signs is “on the high side,” he was unable to provide the department’s own tally for money spent on the signs.

He said, “it is not typical for any state DOT to have the exact cost on every single construction sign. It is a challenge to have that exact figure.”

Ohio was given nearly $1 billion of stimulus money for roadwork. The money used for the signs is only about one-tenth of 1 percent of that money.

But critics argue that stimulus money — all of it — was designed to finance projects, not advertise them.

Although the Obama administration promised the stimulus package would create jobs, there is no evidence that putting up these road signs created any jobs.

Ted Andrzejewski, the mayor of Eastlake, Ohio, and a Democrat, is also angry about the signs.

He says for a bit more than what the road signs cost, he could’ve fixed a road in his community and created more than two dozen jobs. The mayor says all of his stimulus requests were turned down.

“The problem is sometimes our politicians don’t understand what a million dollars is,” Andrzejewski said.

Grendell first noticed the signs last fall. He had to pass one every day on the way to get his morning coffee.

It made him so angry he’d return home mumbling under his breath. He says even after the road project was finished, the sign remained up for some time. He’s so furious about this he introduced a bill to stop the signs and wrote a letter to Ohio’s Democratic governor, Ted Strickland. He never heard back.

The governor’s spokesman told CNN, “It’s common practice on public works projects to demonstrate how tax dollars are spent.”

And it turns out, Ohio isn’t the only state turning taxpayer dollars into road signs.

CNN found most states are spending stimulus money on signs and that could cost taxpayers nationwide about $3.8 million. At least 16 states, however, are skipping the signs and putting the money toward road projects instead.

Vermont is letting residents track where the stimulus money is spent on a Web site created by the state, for a lot less money than the signs being used in Ohio. Grendell thinks that’s a great idea.

“At the end of the day as a public official, we’re accountable for 100 cents on the dollar. We shouldn’t waste one penny, not five pennies. We should use it where it will best benefit the taxpayers,” he says.

Haven’t been adding much here because of the seeingly 7×24 demands on time for work - and finding work (i.e., that pays, not just “thanks” or “how about some more free information?”)

At any rate, here are good places to find out more, and there will be periodic updates and upgrades:

Brief note on likely/apparent mutations in H1N1 with consequences of faster spreading, greater dying

(from a comment to a friend)

Someone asked about CRAIDO, in the context of what is the new transition in the pandemic in eastern Europe and a good part of Europe and possibly Canada already.

This is what many of us in the field were afraid of. And what may be worse, this may be something where a very slight change in the gen sequence leaves the virus similar to current H1N1, yes, but one that enables and supports the concurrent/simultaneous spread of other pulmonary and cardio-pulmonary systemic infections that bring about the cardiopulmonary failures causing death so rapidly and with higher percentages. If so, we are facing something that no single vaccine can handle and people need to know this as a serious possibility.

If CUBIT and CRAIDO and especially our Mutation tracking and the Virtual Sample repository Bank, all developed with cooperation, encouragement, and collaboration from the top people in the field, basically, could have been allowed to get “on the road” physically (for which modest $$$ was required), then a full lab unit could have been in Ukraine one or two weeks ago, supplementing, not competing with, but collaborating with WHO and others.

We could by now have better answers, more accurate fine-tuned sequence answers, and a better and faster “handle” on how to respond to what may very well spread worldwide during the easiest and most prolific time for pandemic spreading - from Nov. through Feb., with the multiple holiday seasonal activity.

Anyhow, I repeat, here below, my comment to my friend who asked about CRAIDO. It has more information on this, and WE ware working as hard as we can, as fast as we can, to develop scientifically sound answers and solutions, as part of an international team. But i have to say “Shame on You” to all those people who know about this months and even years ago and who had and do have plenty of money and who pooh-poohed it all because they thought this flu pandemic and public health risk was just “nothing” and that there would “not be enough profit” on their investments. That is the sorry and pitiful type of people we have produced in terms of our financial sector.

Maybe with the help of God and a lot of people like you, those people can finally be made to realize that this is not just a myth and that they have a responsibility to do things with their capital to help save their neighbors, and their own families.

CRAIDO is a highly compact, reconfigurable labstation, for stationary or mobile use, developed by our group (companies and in academics and national labs). It stands for Community rapid Response for Infectious Disease Outbreaks, and you can read about it at http://tetradyn.com and http://chips.tetradyn.net or contact the people listed there under Contacts.

We have tons of support and yea-saying from others in medicine and science, but stonewalling from the bureaucrats in govt. agencies and totally a dead ear from the financial and investment community.

We predicted (along with many other experts) the likelihood of H1N1 mutations that would be either more rapidly and easily contagious, or more lethal, or less so, or more so and Both faster-moving and more lethal, including variants that would make it easier for other pathogenic conditions to develop alongside the specific influenza virus.

The latter seems to be the case now engulfing Ukraine and spreading in most directions, including EU and it appears also Canada. Therefore it will in all likelihood be in the USA for the full-brunt of flu season.

This is simply the science, the medicine, the prognosis, cold and objective but not heartless.

What is (who are) heartless is, I will state it, are those private-sector investors and money people, both individual and institutional, who said NO to us in last winter and this spring and this summer, and who almost all said we were bluffing, there would be no serious pandemic, all was overblown, it was just a hype and a ruse, and Not Enough Profit for them in everything that you see at http://tetradyn.com including the CRAIDO labstations that have been openly desired by local and state health depts. and some hospitals and clinics in the USA and abroad.

So, I do declare, and would have no compunction about “naming names” of persons who I consider to be responsible for anything worse that comes our way, to our communities and families - except that there is medical work to be done, research and working as best as we can, and that is more important.

those that had the ample, more-than-ample liquid funds, the absence of risk, and who said “pooh-pooh, no way, no problem” - those persons have a moral responsibility for what may very well turn into being a pandemic equaling that of 1918 in intensity.

We were forewarned - not only by us and our group of scientists and doctors, but by others. we were ignored. Now we all face greater risks.

Sincerely,
Dr. Martin Dudziak and Team TETRADYN and the CUBIT Working Group

Advice about Vaccine Concerns

Monday, October 26th, 2009

I had almost finished a detailed comment to you, Andie, and some FB-mixup zapped it. Here’s a shorter one.
Many diffs between H1N1 vaccine of today and std vaccines for influenza-A, or other vaccines for polio, smallpox, and many other diseases. I will try to write a short, clear article and post in here or on the “Daily Vlog” (http://tetradyn.net/blog).
Briefly - today the H1N vaccine in the USA is not well tested, and may not be effective due to mutations that may (sorry to use “may” so much, but that is just the fact of the medical uncertainties) have already occurred.
Is there a known high-probability danger to taking the H1N1 vaccine? Not definite. Will it help a person? Possibly, likely, but not definite.
Should you be worried because you cannot get it? Definitely NO, and we are trying to bring out CRAIDO and our work and information to help people in this respect. There are preventive, prophylactic, personal measures to avoid and to minimize H1N1 apart from any vaccine! This is what is important to know. We are tryint to help, and yes, there are efforts to shut-us-up, esp. in Virginia - thus we ask for help.
We will write more - please check all our links, and most of all, focus on reducing stress, keeping your family aware, practicing avoidance measures, and that includes avoidance of contact situations. Lysol btw will not help!!!

Please write or call or fax to these officials especially

Saturday, October 24th, 2009

They are all listed there. They can make a difference, show an example, take a lead, and help us and therefore help All of Us - that means You and your families, too.  And it is not just about Virginia, for God’s sake!

We are fully ready and prepared with CRAIDO - Now it is needed more than ever - help us with the politics and the barriers

National Emergency now, formally, OK?

Now go to http://tetradyn.com/h1n1-plus-healthcare and just help the whole team - we need your help - communications, emails, faxes, phone calls, and sure, money, but the money will come I am sure, once there is the media visibility.

This is real, non-pharmaceutical, self-care and grou-care, civilian-care, preventive, and we are talking not only about diagnostics but about resilience and stamina for people to Avoid and Survive.

Look, this is basically Free for People!  And I am telling you right here and now, this is not driven by profit desires.  Modest, yes, because we all have families.  But this is not about getting rich at the expense of others!!!!!

The Big Push to get the first CRAIDO units in front of the White House and Capitol

Tuesday, October 20th, 2009

Yes, there is a concrete plan underway.

CRAIDO is of course both for stationary and mobile use.

Read all about it now at this URL:

http://tetradyn.com/h1n1-plus-healthcare

This has resources for every level and type of interest - general public, media/press, scientific, medical, political, business.

Yes, you can also find out more info just at http://tetradyn.com, but the above ins The Place to start to find out everything.

Now that site is just getting built right now (20.Oct.2009), so don’t be surprised if there is not much there until tomorrow, the 21st.

But now we are taking and putting this information, these facts, and our Main Proposals, in front of Every Member of Congress, Every State Legislator and Senator, Every Major and Minor News Media organization, and every state and local dept of health and dept of social services.

The Time Has Come For Economical, Efficient, Practical (and btw bipartisan) Change and Action to Serve the People with better Information, Healthcare, and Responsive Action for not only infectious diseases and epidemic/pandemic incidents, but for public health in general.

We have it, we made it.  And the “we” is a big group of people, not just TETRADYN, not by a long shot.  And I, Martin D, as one central figure in this, I want everyone to know that I am giving credit to all those others, all my colleagues, all those who are really responsible for coming up with CUBIT and CRAIDO, and all the rest of the technology and the human side of this.
